RMC 4.0: flash-integrated protection for an all-flash world

RMC 4.0: flash-integrated protection for an all-flash world

RMC 4.0 is now on general availability so I’d like to use today’s BURAmeter article to overview some of the new features introduced with this release. Delivered as standard with every HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8000 and 20000 model, RMC 4.0 expands the RMC ecosystem to include application-consistent protection for SAP HANA, support for StoreVirtual VSA and the ability to run RMC on a Hyper-V virtual machine. RMC 4.0 also broadens RMC’s potential use cases with bi-directional replication between HPE 3PAR and HPE StoreVirtual arrays. Let’s take a closer look at the data protection challenges that this solution is designed to address and overview the key benefits that RMC 4.0 can deliver HPE 3PAR StoreServ All-Flash customers.

3PAR flash-integrated data protection: reducing risk in the all-flash data center

As mission-critical workloads migrate to flash, risk mitigation is critical. HPE Recovery Manager Central (RMC) integrates HPE 3PAR All-Flash Arrays with HPE StoreOnce Systems to provide a converged replication and backup service optimized for flash environments. It augments traditional backup approaches, combining the performance of snapshots and replication with the protection of backups.

3PAR Flash Integrated Data Protection without compromise

HPE RMC provides seamless, application-managed snapshots and data movement to secondary HPE StoreOnce Systems, independent of backup server software. Only changed blocks are sent to the StoreOnce system. Every backup completes at the speed of an incremental, but is stored as a synthetic full backup, which makes application recovery faster and more efficient.

As a result RMC offers 23x faster backup and 7x faster restore than traditional server based backup processes with no backup impact on the application server.

RMC also enables self-service application managed protection, lowers cost and complexity by reducing the need for a backup application, and reduces risk by protecting applications running on 3PAR against storage platform outage, file loss or application corruption beyond the oldest snapshot.

Watch this new RMC video to learn how 3PAR end to end data integrity, high availability and flash integrated data protection is enabling you to minimize risk and ensure resilience in the all-flash data center.

What’s new in RMC 4.0?

  • Broader application support with fast and affordable end-to-end protection for SAP HANA databases on 3PAR arrays

RMC 4.0 extends application support to SAP HANA and allows customers to protect SAP HANA databases (which use 3PAR as the underlying storage) using application-consistent array-based snapshots and fast, Express Protect backups to StoreOnce – all through the familiar RMC GUI as the management interface. With RMC for SAP HANA customers benefit from a fast, simple, affordable alternative to traditional methods of protecting SAP HANA databases.

For more information check out this HPE RMC for SAP HANA solution brief.

RMC for SAP HANA adds to existing RMC application-consistent protection for VMware, Microsoft SQL, Oracle and any Microsoft VSS-enabled application running as a virtual machine.

  • HPE Peer Copy – bi-directional peer copy between 3PAR and StoreVirtual

With the latest release of Recovery Manager Central 4.0, a new capability comes into play for 3PAR and StoreVirtual VSA – bi-directional replication with HPE Peer Copy.

RMC 4.0

RMC 4.0 can now centrally orchestrate a heterogeneous federated data center from software-defined storage to all-flash arrays to backup solutions. The new data copy feature within RMC 4.0 allows customers to bi-directionally replicate data volumes between StoreVirtual VSA and 3PAR arrays - eliminating the need to use host specific or hypervisor specific tools or expensive network-based appliances.

RMC orchestrates and moves data from a source to destination storage system. It automates the data copy process and makes the volume available for use after the copy without any need to convert the data.

For comprehensive protection RMC can backup the data volumes to StoreOnce, a reliable and cost effective second line of defense that protects applications running on 3PAR and StoreVirtual VSA against file loss or application corruption beyond the oldest snapshot. StoreOnce backups are self-contained, fully independent volumes. RMC 4.0 thus allows you to manage snapshots, replication and backup from a single GUI, enabling you to meet the many recovery SLAs that your business demands.

Here are some key use cases for this new RMC 4.0 bi-directional replication feature.

Use Cases for HPE Peer Copy powered by RMC 4.0

  • Edge to core protection: Helpful in ROBO scenarios, converged solutions such as a ProLiant server running StoreVirtual VSA running in the remote office can use a centralized 3PAR array in the main data center to house replicated volumes from remote sites. You can further reduce your risk exposure by using RMC 4.0 to backup these replicated volumes from 3PAR to StoreOnce. This reduces risk and benefits the customer with only needing a single storage and backup solution in the central office that can connect to software-defined storage solutions in the remote locations.
  • Dev/test to production data copy: The new replication capability can allow for more efficient data transfers in environments involving development and testing of applications and data prior to going into production. Customers can reduce application development costs by testing on software defined converged solutions in the dev, test lab and move to 3PAR in the production environment when ready.
  • Lower cost replication: The ability to use a software-defined storage solution such as StoreVirtual VSA can create a lower cost replication target option for 3PAR arrays within an existing server infrastructure if purchasing a second 3PAR array does not fit within your budget. The secondary solution can still be located on-site or off as well as still providing business continuity and high availability of data.

Only HPE Peer Copy powered by RMC 4.0 can provide customers with a single management tool that federates storage providing integrated data protection and mobility for both software-defined and system-defined solutions.

More flexibility with RMC running on Hyper-V

RMC 4.0 offers a version of the RMC Virtual Appliance that can be run on a Hyper-V Virtual Machine. This allows “all-Microsoft shops” (who are unlikely to have VMware licenses) to run RMC on a Hyper-V VM instead of a VMware VM.

Broader platform integration with support for StoreVirtual VSA

RMC 4.0 enables the protection of VMware VMs on HPE StoreVirtual VSA using application-consistent snapshots and Express Protect Backups to StoreOnce.

More affordable and simplified licensing

All RMC licenses are now included by default (at no extra charge) with all supported primary storage arrays including HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8000 and 20000 models, StoreVirtual VSA and HC 250 Hyper-Converged systems.

Investing in 3PAR flash storage? Don’t overlook data protection

So when you invest in a new 3PAR All-Flash Array, make sure that you take advantage of the end to end data protection that your applications demand. A flash-integrated replication and backup solution is critical for getting the most from your migration to flash. If flash is the future of storage, then the future of data protection is 3PAR flash-integrated with RMC 4.0!
